State PTA President’s Challenge: One More Member in March!

President's Challenge: One More Member in March

California State PTA President Pam Brady has issued a “President’s Challenge” for every PTA member to bring in just one more member before March 31.

We’re to that time of year when our membership recruitment sometimes takes a back seat. This year State PTA’s total numbers have been so far holding close to last year’s numbers. We need to seize this moment. The opportunity is knocking. If we make a focused organization-wide effort during the next month and a half, we have a real chance to show an increase for the year – and ideally get back to the one-million member mark. What a powerful organization statement it will be if even during these tough economic times, PTA is able to increase its numbers on behalf of children.

Find out more about the President’s Challenge and invite others to join PTA! Tell your friends and colleagues about the value of PTA membership. Resources are available in English and in Spanish.

Have You Submitted Your Per Capita Yet?

Every unit was required to submit their initial per capita dues to 17th District by November 15th. In order to remain in good standing, each unit must have submitted per capita for at least 15 members by this date. If you have not done this yet, please contact Myra Gruschka, 17th District Financial Secretary, right away, or your unit may be in danger of losing its charter.

Please remember that your membership drives don’t end in the fall, but continue year-round! Continue to submit per capita for all of your members as you receive them on a monthly basis until March 2009. (Because PTA’s membership year ends on March 31, 2009, any per capita received after March will count to the 2009-10 school year.)

Also, please make sure that all of your members receive membership cards! Every person who joins your unit should receive their membership card so that they can be entitled to the numerous member benefits that are a part of joining PTA. Members also must have a current membership card to apply for PTA grants and scholarships and to attend the California State PTA Convention in April/May. You can download the template for printing membership cards [MS Word], and you can obtain more membership cards by contacting John Sanna, 17th District Membership Chair.

State PTA Press Release: State’s Top Education Leaders Urge Everyone to Join the PTA

The following press release has been issued by the California State PTA today, September 19, 2008. For more information, contact Carol Kocivar, California State PTA Vice President–Communications at (916) 440-1985 or visit the California State PTA website.

SACRAMENTO, CA- California’s top education leaders, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell and Secretary of Education David Long, today called on parents, teachers, and administrators to join the PTA.

Proclaiming September and October “PTA Membership Months,” Secretary Long said, “PTA support for children is critical for the future of California. I urge anyone in California who cares about children and our public schools to join the PTA. Superintendent O’Connell and I are both proud PTA members. Students truly benefit from the active involvement of caring adults and we want every school in California to have a strong PTA. Join us—join PTA!”

“Parent involvement through the PTA is critical for the success of our children,” Superintendent O’Connell said. “PTA volunteers work in schools and communities to improve the education, health and welfare of all children and youth.”

The California State PTA, with nearly one million volunteer members, has been instrumental in efforts to support small class size, bring arts and physical education back into our schools, and ban junk food at school.

PTA provides members with free resources and training to build leadership and parenting skills. It also provides programs on a wide range of topics, including student achievement, childhood nutrition, and prevention of violence and bullying, to increase parent awareness of issues affecting their children.

For more than a century, the PTA has been supporting and advocating for public schools, children and families under the motto “Every child, one voice.” The PTA is non-profit, non-partisan, non-sectarian and non-commercial. For more information about how you can join PTA, go to www.capta.org and click on “Join PTA.”

The mission of the California State PTA is to positively impact the lives of all children and families by representing our members and empowering and supporting them with skills in advocacy, leadership and communications.
