About 17th District PTA

The California Seventeenth District PTA is one of 29 district PTAs organized by the California State PTA. We represent 99 local PTA/PTSA associations in San Mateo County (known as “units”)–73 of which are a part of 7 councils, and 26 of which do not belong to a council (”out-of-council units”). 17th District has 21,588 members (as of the 2007-08 membership year) among its units.

The district serves as the connecting link between the local unit and council PTAs and the California State PTA, and is responsible for collecting information from units and councils to send to State PTA, and also for disseminating information from State PTA to units and councils. 17th District also provides numerous resources to unit and council PTAs, including officer training. The district is also responsible for helping to form a new unit and to disband a unit (something that we don’t like to see happen).

17th District also puts on numerous events for schools and associations in San Mateo County. Our annual Superintendents Luncheon in November is a place for PTA members to meet and chat with principals and superintendents from the county. Our annual Founder’s Day Luncheon in February celebrates the anniversary of the founding of PTA, in which we present Honorary Service Awards to members of the community who have made significant contributions to PTA, and elect our new officers every other year. We also hold an annual “Spotlight on PTA” May Event which comprises of a training, speaker, and (every other year) installation of new officers. In addition, 17th District hosts Candidates Forums when county school board elections are approaching, and also represents PTA on many county and community committees. In 2006 we funded a grant for a “Seed to Table” Community Schools gardening program for students.

17th District holds three annual meetings per year, in October, February, and May, where we bring business to the general membership of 17th District, and often present speakers and other information as well. Anyone who is a member of one of the local units within 17th District is automatically a member of 17th District and is eligible to participate and vote at our general meetings.

Units and Councils in 17th District

Many units within 17th District are organized under a Council of PTAs. The council is a PTA organization which typically covers units within a school district. Councils have their own executive board and meetings. The council level is responsible for providing assistance and leadership to their unit officers, trainings, etc. Council presidents are automatically a member of the 17th District PTA Board of Managers, and represent their council and its units at 17th District board meetings.

Units which have not been organized under a council are deemed as ‘out-of-council’ units, and fall directly underneath 17th District. 17th District unofficially organizes nearby out-of-council units into areas, and each area is assigned a counselor from its Board of Managers to assist the units within the area and represent them at 17th District board meetings.

If you are a unit officer and have a question about PTA, you should contact your council or your area counselor first.
